Roketsan’s new naval interceptor hit a sea-skimming target dead-on during a live-fire test, showcasing its potential as the Turkish Navy’s next shipborne counter-drone and missile defense option.
The Turkish defense giant’s HISAR-D Radio Frequency (RF) missile achieved the milestone during a series of demonstrations aboard the TCG Istanbul-class frigate, integrated with the MIDLAS vertical launch system.
As the tests progressed, the company made adjustments to the missile that could prepare it for eventual deployment with the fleet.
The HISAR-D RF is designed to bridge the gap between close-in weapon systems and long-range interceptors, a key element in Turkey’s “Steel Dome” initiative aimed at building a fully indigenous, layered air defense structure against drones and other aerial threats.
The Navy’s Choice?
Roketsan’s new missile takes inspiration from its own HISAR-O RF medium-range munition.
Equipped with an active radar seeker, the HISAR-D RF can take on targets up to 40 kilometers (25 miles) away and at altitudes above 15 kilometers (9.3 miles).
Its dual-pulse motor provides the missile extra punch as it approaches a target, increasing the probability of a confirmed kill.
While Roketsan has not disclosed operational cost details on the HISAR-D RF missiles, the company is reportedly under contract to mass produce its HISAR-O system for Turkey’s Defense Industry Agency until 2029.
