Navies looking for ways to defend their ships against drones, missiles, and other threats now have another option to consider, with BAE Systems bringing its new Sea Tridon 40mm naval gun system to Euronaval 2026.

The system is built around the company’s combat-proven Bofors 40mm gun and programmable 3P ammunition, giving it the ability to engage threats in the air, on the water, and along the shore.

Sea Tridon is part of a four-system family that also includes Sea TridonC, Sea Trinity, and the Bofors 40 Mk4 Naval Gun, with each configuration offering different levels of sensor integration, fire control, and installation flexibility.

The Sea Tridon combines the 40mm gun with an integrated electro-optical fire-control system, while Sea TridonC places the same concept in a containerized package that can be installed on military, government, or commercial vessels for temporary protection requirements.

Sea Trinity takes the system further by adding integrated radar fire control to create a close-in weapon system designed to counter missiles, drones, and other high-speed threats, while the Bofors 40 Mk4 is designed for integration with existing ship combat systems.

“The maritime threat landscape is evolving rapidly, creating a growing need for flexible and effective protection solutions,” said Lena Gillström, president of BAE Systems Bofors.

More Flexibility in Every Shot

A common feature across the four systems is BAE’s Bofors 3P programmable ammunition, which can be configured immediately before firing to match the type of target being engaged.

The ammunition offers six programmable fuze modes, allowing a single ammunition family to be used against different threats without requiring separate rounds for each engagement scenario.

This gives naval operators more flexibility when responding to airborne threats, surface targets, and shore-based positions, while reducing the need to manage multiple ammunition types.

Gillström said the modular family allows navies and maritime operators to select the level of protection suited to their requirements while retaining common technology and support arrangements.

“With the Sea Tridon, navies and maritime operators can select the capability level that best meets their operational needs while benefiting from a common platform, proven technology, and advanced programmable ammunition,” she said.

BAE Systems is displaying Sea Tridon at Euronaval 2026 in Paris, where the company is presenting the system as part of its broader range of naval protection solutions.
