An integrated system from Leonardo DRS could give naval vessels a full counter-drone capability, with its Maritime Mission Equipment Package (M-MEP) now being embedded into maritime platforms.

The system is designed for rapid integration across both crewed and uncrewed vessels, enabling the detection, identification, and engagement of unmanned threats in one capability.

M-MEP combines maritime radars and electro-optical/infrared sensors to detect inbound drone threats, distinguishing whether they are individual units or a simultaneous swarm.

Once a threat is identified, the system can cue GPS- and 5G-based electronic warfare (EW) tools to disrupt and neutralize it.

It is supported by the SAGEcore software platform, which enables AI-driven sensor fusion and command-and-control functions, while an integration kit simplifies installation across multiple vessel types.

“Aerial unmanned threats are evolving quickly — in range, autonomy, and numbers,” said Cari Ossenfort, senior vice president and general manager of Leonardo’s Naval Electronics business unit.

“The M-MEP is engineered to help the US Navy and allied forces stay ahead of that threat with a modular package that brings sensors, command and control, and defeat options together into one integrated capability that can be fielded fast.”

Predicting Emerging Threats

Using machine learning and AI, M-MEP can anticipate emerging threats and recommend engagement responses.

It also enabled continuous use of onboard EW capabilities, supporting persistent threat monitoring and protection of critical maritime assets.

The system is designed for ongoing upgrades to counter evolving adversary tactics.

System Showcase

Leonardo DRS has integrated M-MEP onto a Sea Machines Stormrunner autonomous unmanned surface vehicle, which will be displayed at the Navy League Sea-Air-Space Symposium.

The company will also showcase how the system can be paired with US Navy assets to enhance maritime domain awareness and extend layered defense capabilities across surface fleets.
