Quantum tech is taking flight on America’s hydrogen-powered drones, thanks to a new partnership between IonQ and Heven AeroTech.

The collaboration will explore using IonQ’s quantum networking tools to establish secure communication links between unmanned platforms. Quantum computing systems will also support route planning and the integration of drone and satellite imagery.

Meanwhile, quantum sensors will provide alternative positioning and navigation to counter GPS interference, enhancing the drones’ resilience, stealth, and autonomous capabilities in contested environments.

As part of the partnership, Jordan Shapiro, president and general manager of IonQ’s Quantum Networking, Sensing and Security division, will join Heven AeroTech’s board of directors.

US Defense Linkages

IonQ’s work with Heven AeroTech fits into a broader push to bring quantum technologies into existing and future US defense programs.

The company holds four Air Force Research Laboratory contracts, each around $100 million, advancing quantum computing and secure networking for next-gen command-and-control systems.

Acquisitions of Vector Atomic and Capella Space further expand IonQ’s capabilities in quantum sensing and space-based data services.
