Naval aviation is edging further into a new era of modernization as Boeing’s long-awaited MQ-25A Stingray took to the skies for the first time in a recent test.
The unmanned tanker flew autonomously for over two hours, handling take-off and landing on its own while responding to commands from Boeing and US Navy pilots via a ground control station.
During the flight, the MQ-25A executed a mission plan that validated its flight controls, navigation systems, and integration with Lockheed Martin’s MDCX command-and-control platform.

The milestone moves the drone closer to carrier-based operations, supporting the US Navy’s “hybrid fleet” vision that blends manned and unmanned systems.
“Today’s successful flight builds on years of learning from our MQ-25A T1 prototype and represents a major maturation of the program,” said Boeing Air Dominance Vice President and General Manager Dan Gillian.
“The MQ-25A is the most complex autonomous system ever developed for the carrier environment, and this historic achievement advances us closer to safely integrating the Stingray into the carrier air wing.”
‘Future of Naval Aviation’
Measuring over 51 feet (15.5 meters), Stingray is designed to refuel carrier-based aircraft, extending the operational range of the carrier air wing.
It is expected to take over the aerial refueling role currently performed by the F/A-18 Super Hornet, allowing the fighter jet to focus more fully on strike missions.
The MQ-25A is part of four Engineering Development Model aircraft set to be delivered to the US Navy under an $805-million contract.
