Airbus has answered NATO’s call for the next generation of rotorcraft fleet, unveiling two concepts designed for high-speed flights and operational flexibility.
The aerospace giant is proposing a conventional helicopter optimized for high performance alongside an advanced compound aircraft built for rapid, high-tempo operations.
Both concepts reportedly prioritize modularity and simplicity, using an open architecture that allows sensors, weapons, and other critical payloads to be integrated without major platform changes.

This approach not only reduces maintenance costs and simplifies repair methods but also ensures NATO aircraft can keep up with evolving aerial threats.
The two designs are meant to complement each other, giving military forces an option to deploy which aircraft works best for a specific mission.
“These two concepts are a basis to further exchange with our military partners on their vision and need for future military operations,” Airbus Helicopters Chief Executive Officer Bruno Even said.
Building on Proven Tech
Airbus is building on its experience with X3 and Racer helicopters, which boast compound designs with added wings and propellers.
These configurations allow faster flight and broader mission envelopes, enabling rapid climbs, decelerations, and safer operations in diverse environments.
Flight tests with military pilots have validated the performance of these proven aircraft, providing a solid foundation for Airbus’ next-gen concepts.

The new designs have been submitted to NATO for its Next-Generation Rotorcraft Capabilities program, laying the groundwork for future development in collaboration with Collins Aerospace, Raytheon, and MBDA.
“Airbus Helicopters is actively working on the future of its military range,” Even stated.
“We are working on the next generation of rotorcraft systems, leveraging modular multi-platform technologies such as connectivity, cybersecurity, crewed-uncrewed teaming, multi-domain collaborative combat, survivability, and battle damage repair.”
