US forces could soon rely on a new cargo drone to take over high-risk supply missions, keeping troops out of the crosshairs while operating in the world’s most dangerous environments.
California-based Pyka recently showcased its DropShip platform in a demonstration with the US Armed Forces and first responders, highlighting its ability to operate autonomously in contested airspace.
The drone is designed to support tactical resupply, asset transfer, and medical evacuation missions in areas too risky for personnel to enter.
Powered by a hybrid propulsion system, it can haul 500 pounds (227 kilograms) of cargo for 1,000 miles (1,609 kilometers), or travel over 3,500 miles (5,632 kilometers) unladen.
An open-source mission computer allows plug-and-play payloads up to 650 pounds (295 kilograms), letting the drone adapt to various mission sets.
DropShip is positioned as a cost-conscious solution to asymmetric threats, operating in environments where traditional platforms may be at risk.
Hiding From Enemy Fire
While primarily intended for precise tactical airdrops, DropShip can also carry intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance payloads for covert operations.
Its low-noise electric rotor supports stealthy approaches, helping the drone infiltrate enemy airspace without getting spotted.
The platform can cruise at 75 knots (139 kilometers/86 miles per hour) or sprint at 90 knots (166 kilometers/103 miles per hour).
Pyka said DropShip can take off and land from austere locations, including dirt, gravel, graded roads, or other off-runway sites, making it a flexible option for frontline logistics.
