Ukraine’s standard infantry rifles are getting an upgrade with a newly-unveiled 5.56mm ammunition designed to take down unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) threats.
The new 5.56mm rounds, the most common caliber used by Ukrainian infantry units, will be fitted with a custom warhead that bursts upon firing, spraying fragments into multiple directions instead of punching straight through like normal bullets.
This allows soldiers to directly engage with fast-moving drones and reconnaissance UAVs using their regular infantry rifles with no additional modifications.
Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov stated that the goal with the UAV-busting 5.56mm rounds is “to supply each infantryman with at least one magazine,” adding that it gives them a “last-resort protection” to aerial threats in the battlefield.

Brave1, Ukraine’s defense innovation cluster and manufacturer of the anti-drone 5.56mm ammunition, has announced that the rounds have been codified for use and are set for widespread frontline deployment.
A Direct-Fire Solution
Drones present a challenge for infantry units due to their speed, size, and maneuverability. Their unpredictable flight patterns often make it difficult to detect with traditional aerial defense systems.
The development of Brave1’s anti-drone ammunition is Ukraine’s solution to the increasing use of UAV systems in its war against Russia.
While Ukraine already uses a range of advanced counter-drone systems, the upgraded 5.56mm bullets give soldiers a direct-fire option when speed matters most.
“They help significantly increase the chances of hitting an FPV drone before it has time to attack,” Fedorov added.
