A Dutch-American defense partnership has created a multi-layered interceptor system that can match different weapons to the range and type of an incoming threat.

The Adaptive Scalable Tactical Response Architecture (ASTRA), developed by Dutch drone maker Destinus and Texas-based startup Aeon, integrates multiple interceptor classes into a single defense architecture.

For longer-range threats, ASTRA can cue Destinus’ combat-proven Hornet interceptor as an initial defense option, while a high-speed interceptor is intended to counter cruise missiles and ballistic threats.

At shorter ranges, Aeon’s Zeus missile provides another layer of protection for radars, launchers, and critical command-and-control nodes.

The goal is to give operators a single system that can respond to a range of aerial threats, including jet-powered drones used by Russia against Ukraine.

“There’s autonomy already in these systems, but what we want to do with the Department of War is to make these more applicable to US [platforms],” Aeon Chief Growth Officer Wes Shover told Tectonic.

European Interceptors, Made in Texas

Aeon is expected to manufacture Destinus’ Hornet Block 2 interceptors at its new 145,000-square-foot (13,471-square-meter) facility in Texas.

According to Shover, the company aims to begin production in the second quarter of 2027, with a target of producing 500 interceptors per month.

“Our vision is to leverage our vertical integration, our manufacturing space and capabilities, and take lessons learned so we can copy-paste that production schema in Europe here in the United States to quickly fill the gap in our interceptors,” Shover said.

ASTRA Makes the Army’s Top 10

ASTRA is one of 10 finalists in the US Army’s xTech|Apex Intercept competition, which seeks lower-cost interceptors that can augment the service’s PATRIOT air and missile defense system.

The solution was selected for the Low-Cost Interceptor All Up Round and Fire Control category, with Aeon scheduled to demonstrate the Hornet Block 2 interceptor later this year.

“Our solution is built around this requirement, combining the complementary engineering, manufacturing, and interceptor expertise of Aeon and Destinus,” said Naweed Tahmas, Aeon CEO.
