A new heavy unmanned ground vehicle (H-UGV) is hitting Ukrainian battlefields to support frontline operations.

The VATAG is Kyiv’s latest H-UGV, capable of taking on engineering tasks, personnel evacuation, direct-fire combat, and heavy-lift logistics.

It has a payload capacity of up to two tons (2,000 kilograms), enabling autonomous tactical support in high-risk zones.

VATAG is equipped with a remote 25mm automatic cannon and integrated AI for both its hardware and software for enhanced decision-making on the battlefield.

“Our aim is to save as many lives as possible and to minimize risks to personnel,” said VATAG Head of Project Development Anatoly Nikitin.

“For this reason, our roadmap includes increasing the platform’s payload capacity, improving interoperability with existing systems, and expanding operational scenarios.”

Under the Hood

The platform is powered by a hybrid drive that cuts back on fuel use. Its electric propulsions also allows for silent operation, making VATAG a valuable tool for covert operations.

Its AI features extend to navigation, enabling autonomous route planning and obstacle avoidance.

The H-UGV also comes equipped with multichannel communications systems that automatically switches to the most reliable channel while remaining resilient to electronic warfare.

With weapon modules in development, VATAG can soon be fitted with universal combat payloads for even more mission flexibility.

The H-UGV was first unveiled at the Defense Tech Valley 2025 expo in Ukraine.
