Ukraine is taking another step toward a robotized battlefield, launching a grant competition to develop armed humanoid robots for frontline missions.

Announced by Brave1 CEO Andriy Hrytsenyuk, the initiative aims to expand the use of robotic systems in high-risk combat zones, reducing the exposure of Ukrainian troops.

Developers taking part in the competition will initially focus on simple humanoid platforms that can gradually evolve into more advanced systems as the program progresses.

The effort will focus exclusively on defense applications, with the robots expected to help Ukrainian forces hold positions and carry out combat missions more effectively.

Hrytsenyuk said the initiative also reflects Ukraine’s effort to keep pace with global advances in robotics, including developments in the US and China.

Additional details about the program were not disclosed.

Building on Existing Robots

The competition builds on robotic systems already fielded in Ukraine, including Foundation’s Phantom MK-1 humanoid platform.

The robots have operated alongside troops in reconnaissance missions and other frontline tasks.

Described as the first purpose-built humanoid robots for defense, the Phantom MK-1 can carry mission payloads of up to 88 pounds (40 kilograms), including pistols and standard rifles.
