The Ukrainian Marine Corps has introduced its latest unmanned surface vessel (USV), built for the treacherous terrain of rivers and coastal waters.

Dubbed Barracuda, the modular craft can be fitted with different weapon systems depending on the mission.

While additional details were not disclosed, Ukraine’s 40th Coastal Defense Brigade said the platform carries “elements of artificial intelligence,” suggesting it could operate with greater autonomy — spotting threats, navigating complex waterways, and easing the workload on human operators.

Barracuda is also reported to have remote control features and modernized tracking systems that “guarantee reliable movement” in any weather, day or night.

By design, the USV is meant to take on missions too risky for human crews, from fire support and supply delivery to casualty evacuation and mine deployment.

Riding the Waters

Barracuda was unveiled in a new brigade video showcasing its versatility.

In one scenario, the drone appeared armed with single-shot grenade launchers, remotely operated from a command station. Another clip showed it deploying naval mines to seal narrow channels.

The unmanned vessel has also been tested in transport roles, ferrying soldiers and supplies across open waters.

“Our infantrymen showed how they interact with an unmanned boat created by the Special Forces of the same name,” the brigade stated.
