The Typhoon uncrewed surface vessel (USV) from US firm Splash Industries can now launch one-way attack drones from the sea, thanks to a new Airstrike Pack mission module.
At its core, the system allows operators to deploy aerial drones with the press of a button through the company’s command-and-control system, known as Splash C2.
Splash Industries, based in California, said the module has already been tested during a force-on-force exercise.
The module features rugged construction, a low-cost architecture, and simplified operation supported by internally developed electronics and software.
Details on how many drones the deck can carry, along with their weight, size, and key capabilities, remain undisclosed.
“By taking this vertically-integrated approach, we’re able to provide an industry-leading unmanned aerial vehicle deployment capability at a tenth of the price of our nearest competitor,” the company stated.
Beyond the Airstrike Pack
Measuring 11 feet (3.4 meters), the USV features an operational range of 600 nautical miles (690 miles/1,111 kilometers) and reached top speeds exceeding 70 knots (80 miles/130 kilometers per hour) in testing.
It incorporates a deck that can be changed to carry different cargo loads or sensor systems and supports a range of missions including maritime security, cargo delivery, and surveillance.
During the Rim of the Pacific exercise, Typhoon completed the fully autonomous underway resupply mission involving a US Navy warship, delivering parts to the USS Essex (LHD 2).
According to Defence Blog, the USV maneuvered around the amphibious assault ship, crossed its wake, and entered the flooded well deck without commands over radio or satellite links.
The Naval Postgraduate School’s Consortium for Advanced Manufacturing Research and Education oversaw the operation.
