EDGE is turning the familiar MK 82 into a hardened-target killer with its new Penetrator aircraft munition.

Developed by the Emirati defense firm’s LAHAB unit, the weapon can reportedly punch through more than a meter of concrete, giving aircraft a dedicated option for attacking fortified positions.

Based on available imagery, the munition features a dark matte-gray body with “MK82 PENETRATOR” markings along its midsection.

It is compatible with NATO-configuration aircraft, including fourth- and 4.5-generation multirole fighters, variable-geometry strike aircraft, advanced jet trainers, and light attack platforms.

According to the company, it can also be carried by fifth-generation fighters and aircraft already certified to use the MK 82 General Purpose munition.

The MK 82 Penetrator can be paired with precision-guidance kits from EDGE’s AL TARIQ and THUNDER families, expanding its options for precision strikes.

“We have introduced a new application-specific product that expands the end-user’s capabilities while maintaining familiarity and ease of use,” said Mohammed Arbabi, chief executive officer of LAHAB.

“More importantly… This is a reflection of our broader commitment to serving and strengthening our national capabilities.”

Putting Penetration to the Test

EDGE completed development of the MK 82 Penetrator after a test campaign covering performance, qualification, and environmental conditions.

The munition was assessed against several hardened target types and subjected to environmental qualification trials.

During the tests, it penetrated more than one meter (3.3 feet) of reinforced concrete without exhibiting a “J” effect, meaning it maintained its trajectory rather than deflecting on impact.

The MK 82 Penetrator is the first of two planned variants, with the MK 83 now at an advanced stage of development.

The program is part of a broader effort to build domestic UAE capabilities for developing, qualifying, and producing munitions for the country and its international partners.
