The Taiwanese Navy has flown a new medium-class one-way strike drone for the first time during the Han Kuang exercise, adding another locally developed autonomous weapon to Taiwan’s growing drone arsenal.
The drone flew over the beach for about 30 minutes while simulating an attack on Tsoying, home to Taiwan’s largest naval base.
According to Business Insider, the platform was provided by the Ministry of National Defence’s Armament Bureau to the navy for testing purposes.
Its specifications remain largely undisclosed, but observers have described a streamlined fuselage with a rear-mounted propeller, features that have drawn comparisons to Ukraine’s mid-range one-way attack drones.
An inverted antenna housing also appears to extend beneath the rear section, potentially supporting communications or flight stability.
Supporting ‘Over-the-Horizon’ Attack
If fielded, the drone could give Taiwan a low-cost option for striking Chinese forces, slow-moving vessels, and other targets from beyond the horizon.
The system is intended for the island’s challenging littoral environment, where strong winds, rough seas, and unpredictable weather can complicate drone operations.
“A range of 40 to 60 kilometers (25 to 37 miles) would be very useful for a whole host of different platforms, anything to make it more difficult for the People’s Liberation Army to start getting into Taiwan’s territorial waters,” said Bryce Barros, a visiting fellow at the Institute for National Defense and Security Research.
Part of Modernization
The flight comes as Taiwan moves to rapidly expand domestic drone production and incorporate more autonomous systems into its defense strategy.
Taiwan’s Defense Ministry proposed a $6.6 billion procurement plan in June covering more than 210,000 domestically produced attack, reconnaissance, and maritime drones.
The effort forms part of Taiwan’s emerging “hellscape” strategy, which aims to slow Chinese forces crossing the Taiwan Strait by flooding the battlespace with large numbers of autonomous systems in the event of a conflict.
