Indra is working on a new laser-guided point-defense system that would give Spanish Navy warships a final layer of protection against boats, drones, and anti-ship missiles.

The system features a modular architecture that allows equipment from different manufacturers to be integrated with minimal modification.

It combines an X-band fire-control radar for target detection and tracking with a turret, laser-guided missiles, and an advanced command-and-control system.

The effort is part of the Shipborne Launcher System Special Modernization Programme (SILAEM), which has secured 51 million euros ($59 million) in funding.

Development will focus on two variants: a stand-alone configuration and another integrated with the Spanish Navy’s SCOMBA combat management system.

According to the company, the program is intended to strengthen layered naval defenses by allowing ships to engage threats at different ranges using the most appropriate sensors and weapons.

Part of Ongoing Modernization

The SILAEM program is part of the Spanish Navy’s broader fleet modernization effort to address evolving maritime threats.

Earlier this year, the Spanish government authorized Navantia to design and build two Buques de Acción Marítima (BAM)-class offshore patrol vessels.

The ships will feature upgraded combat and platform management systems, enhanced communications and navigation capabilities, as well as unmanned and cybersecurity systems.

Together, the programs underscore Spain’s push to equip its fleet with more advanced capabilities for modern naval operations.
