Mortar operations are entering into a modern phase, as Rheinmetall introduces a system designed to enhance mobility, responsiveness, and battlefield integration in today’s security environment.

The Ragnarok Mortar Mission Module is built to enable repositioning immediately after firing, building on established “shoot-and-scoot” practices but tailored for modern operational demands.

It can be mounted on a wide range of military platforms and is compatible with different 120mm barrels, reflecting a modular approach aligned with current force requirements.

The module was recently demonstrated in a live-fire exercise conducted in sub-zero temperatures and high humidity, highlighting its suitability for demanding and unpredictable conditions.

During the test, the Ragnarok system was integrated into a Rheinmetall HX truck to showcase its vehicle-mounted configuration and rapid-response capability.

According to Rheinmetall, the module is positioned as a scalable solution intended to support modernization efforts across European armed forces by delivering effectiveness through speed, reliability, and affordability.

Addressing Current Operational Demands

The Ragnarok module comes amid increasing emphasis on mobility and rapid-response capabilities within European forces.

Rheinmetall noted that recent regional conflicts have accelerated demand for systems capable of supporting faster decision-making and improved battlefield mobility.

“Today’s security environment requires us to act in a targeted manner,” said Rheinmetall Nordic Chief Executive Officer Morten Kjorum

“Our goal is clear: we want to deliver systems that meet the operational requirements of European soldiers at the speed that the current situation demands.”
