Lockheed Martin is introducing a next-generation Patriot interceptor designed to counter emerging hypersonic missile threats.

Known as PAC-3 Edge, the interceptor features a multi-pulse solid rocket motor developed by Northrop Grumman to deliver precise thrust throughout flight.

According to Lockheed, the system also incorporates control-system upgrades and a new seeker equipped with advanced defense technology.

Once fielded, PAC-3 Edge is intended to complement the US Army’s Integrated Air and Missile Defense architecture, strengthening its layered defenses to protect critical assets.

The interceptor is also designed to integrate with the Integrated Battle Command System, the M903 launcher, containerized launchers, and HIMARS Flex.

“Lockheed Martin’s PAC-3 Edge interceptor leverages… greater maneuverability, power, and velocity to ensure the Army’s layered defensive architecture remains the most advanced in the world,” said Tim Cahill, president of Missiles and Fire Control at Lockheed Martin.

Lockheed will display a full-scale model of PAC-3 Edge at the AUSA Annual Meeting & Exposition in Washington, D.C., from October 12 to 14.

Path Toward Deployment

PAC-3 Edge is being positioned for the US Army’s Future Interceptor program, which aims to replace the existing PAC-3 MSE interceptor.

Lockheed has invested $250 million in its Strigo Product Center to develop the new seeker, with interceptor testing planned to begin in 2027.

The system joins the company’s broader PAC-3 missile family, which includes the PAC-3 ACE, the PAC-3 CRI, and the PAC-3 MSE.

Rapid deployment is scheduled for 2031.
