Rheinmetall is looking to shape the next generation of naval warfare with a new guided missile frigate designed for what it calls “the world’s most demanding threat environments.”

Known as the GMF 140, the 6,000-tonne platform combines air and ballistic missile defense, anti-submarine warfare, and long-range strike capabilities in a single vessel.

The frigate is primarily intended for blue-water operations but is also designed to support expeditionary, littoral, and coalition missions.

According to Rheinmetall, the GMF 140 is engineered for reduced crew requirements and features a digitally integrated architecture to support modern naval operations.

Measuring 140 meters (459 feet) in length, the frigate can accommodate US-made radar and combat management systems capable of detecting and tracking a range of aerial threats, including hypersonic weapons and ballistic missiles.

The design also incorporates a low-signature hull, an integrated acoustic management system, and multiple sonar systems intended to reduce the vessel’s detectability while strengthening its anti-submarine capabilities.

Adapting to the Modern Fight

Rheinmetall said the GMF 140 is intended to meet the operational requirements of NATO and allied navies seeking a multi-role surface combatant.

The company added that the design is tailored for emerging threats across the European, North Atlantic, and Indo-Pacific theaters and could appeal to countries pursuing fleet modernization efforts.

Rheinmetall plans to initially market the GMF 140 to North American customers before expanding its campaign to other naval operators.

“The GMF 140 establishes a new benchmark for survivability, lethality, and mission flexibility in the global frigate market,” Rheinmetall stated.
