Six weeks was all Thales Australia needed to design, build, and live-fire a prototype of its new “Guardian Angel” autonomous 8×4 unmanned ground vehicle (UGV).

Built to reduce troop exposure in high-risk environments, the multi-role platform can be configured for medical evacuation, reconnaissance, troop and fire support, and cargo transport.

It also supports containerized mission payloads, remote weapon stations, and communications systems.

Guardian Angel is designed to operate alongside Thales’ Bushmaster and StrikerMaster protected mobility vehicles, extending battlefield capability while keeping soldiers farther from direct threats.

“Guardian Angel has been built leveraging Thales Australia’s expertise in manufacturing, cutting-edge technology and integration, protected mobility vehicle design, and industry partnerships,” Andrew Downes, vice president of Land at Thales Australia, told Australian Defence Magazine.

“UGVs can preserve soldiers by operating in high-risk environments while providing a clear tactical advantage.”

Inspired by a Protective Battlefield Role

The Guardian Angel takes its name from a role performed by Australian troops deployed to the Middle East, where soldiers protected fellow service members operating in exposed and dangerous environments.

Tested at Thales Australia’s facility in New South Wales, the prototype is intended to serve as the foundation for future UGV variants.

The vehicle was developed in partnership with Australian autonomy specialist Chaos 1 and weapon mounting systems manufacturer W&E Platt, enabling the rapid six-week development timeline.

“The Thales team, in partnership with Chaos 1 and W & E Platt, have delivered this UGV in an extremely compressed time-frame, which is a testament to the skill, dedication and expertise of the workforce at Lithgow,” Downes added.
