Lockheed Martin and Rheinmetall have completed the first live-fire test of the Global Mobile Artillery Rocket System (GMARS), a next-gen launcher capable of firing twice the payload of HIMARS.
The dual-pod launcher blends combat-proven US missile systems with a European-built 8×8 tactical truck tailored for NATO use.
It can fire up to 12 Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS), four Precision Strike Missiles (PrSM), or two Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS).
By contrast, HIMARS carries just one pod capable of launching six GMLRS or one ATACMS, and is mounted on a lighter 6×6 truck, making it transportable via C-130.

Once fielded, GMARS is expected to give NATO forces a mobile and survivable alternative to tracked artillery launchers, with better road performance for enhanced mobility.
Lockheed and Rheinmetall are set to explore future GMARS variants that could support 122mm rockets and ground-launched cruise missiles, further expanding the system’s battlefield versatility.
From Prototype to Proving Ground
The GMARS system recently completed its first live-fire test at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, successfully launching a GMLRS rocket in front of US and allied observers.

The event marked a key milestone in the GMARS program, which aims to deliver a modern, road-mobile precision fires platform capable of executing deep-strike missions with both existing and future munitions.
“We are thrilled to have achieved this major milestone in the GMARS program,” said Björn Bernhard, CEO of Rheinmetall Vehicle Systems Europe. “The successful live fire showcases the system’s precision and reliability, and we are confident that GMARS will meet the evolving needs of our customers.”
With its first live fire complete, GMARS now moves toward full qualification, bringing the system closer to market and operational deployment.
