A Ukrainian firm has begun early-stage efforts to develop a new air defense solution it describes as a low-cost alternative to the American “Patriot” system.

Kyiv-based Fire Point has reached out to European industry partners for the project, which aims to push the cost of intercepting ballistic missiles well below $1 million.

While participating firms were not disclosed, co-founder Denys Shtiliierman said the company is “deeply interested” in exploring radar systems, missile guidance, and communication networks with its partners.

The initiative runs alongside Fire Point’s broader work on supersonic systems, including the 200-kilometer (124-mile) FP-7 system and the FP-9 missile, which is designed to reach speeds of up to 2,200 meters (7,218 feet) per second.

Shtiliierman said the company intends to draw on its experience with long-range drones and its trademark Flamingo cruise missile, which has been used in strikes deep inside Russian territory.

He added that such weapon systems could tip the scale in the Russia-Ukraine conflict by pressuring Moscow’s air defenses to adapt to Kyiv’s evolving capabilities.

Redefining Modern Air Defense

In current warfare, Western militaries rely on US-made systems such as the Patriot missile for air defense.

However, rising costs have made them increasingly difficult to procure and sustain, with Shtiliierman noting that Patriots now reach several million dollars.

Fire Point’s new system is being positioned as a “game changer” in air defense solutions, with emphasis on mass production and high-volume deployment.

The company aims to conduct its first missile intercept with the system by the end of 2027.
