Two German firms have demonstrated a drone boat designed to emerge from submarine torpedo tubes, completing sea trials that validate the concept in real maritime conditions.
Submarine developer GABLER and Rostock-based FLANQ tested their jointly developed “Ranger” demonstrator, a torpedo-tube-launched uncrewed surface vessel (TTL USV) designed to give naval forces a new way to deploy autonomous systems.
The platform is built to launch from standard 21-inch (53-centimeter) torpedo tubes and operate independently on covert intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions.
Measuring more than 4.5 meters (15 feet) long, the demonstrator features a folding keel, sensor mast, and configurable payload bay, with an electric drivetrain allowing it to navigate through challenging maritime conditions.

The companies said the sea acceptance test (SAT) validated key elements of Ranger’s technology, marking an important step toward advancing the TTL USV concept for future operational use.
“June’s successful SAT shows how conventional naval platforms and next-generation autonomy can be brought together to create entirely new capabilities for domain advantage,” said Jannik Sauer, chief technology officer at FLANQ.
Designed for the Modern Fleet
FLANQ is responsible for Ranger’s AI-powered autonomy features, mission software, and open capability architecture, enabling the vessel to operate with greater independence once deployed.
Meanwhile, GABLER will focus on commercializing the system, delivering it to naval customers, and exploring potential integration opportunities with interested partners.
While initially designed for ISR missions, a one-way attack variant known as “Strike” is reportedly under development.
The companies see autonomous naval systems like Ranger and Strike as a key tool for future hybrid maritime operations.
Deploying uncrewed vessels from protected platforms such as submarines could extend naval reach while reducing risks to human crews.
