One of the world’s most widely used machine guns is getting a battlefield refresh.
Belgian firearms manufacturer FN Herstal has unveiled the FN MAG TACTICAL with Long Rail, a new variant of its combat-proven general purpose machine gun designed to accommodate the growing use of day, night, and thermal optics in modern warfare.
The upgrade builds on the long operational history of the FN MAG, a 7.62×51-millimeter NATO machine gun currently fielded by military forces in 90 countries.
Rather than redesigning the weapon, the company focused on improving how troops interact with it, introducing new ergonomic features and expanded space for advanced sighting systems.
At the center of the update is an 11-inch (28-centimeter) monolithic top rail that provides approximately 14 inches (35.5 centimeters) of mounting space for in-line optics while preserving the use of the weapon’s original iron sights.

This configuration allows operators to pair daytime and nighttime optics on the same platform, a capability increasingly seen on precision rifles but less common on machine guns.
According to FN, the new configuration is intended to bring the MAG’s user interface closer to modern infantry weapons while maintaining the performance standards that made the machine gun a global benchmark.
Built Around Modern Battlefield Demands
The FN MAG TACTICAL with Long Rail introduces several changes aimed at improving handling and reducing the burden on operators.
Among them is a redesigned feed cover featuring an ambidextrous latch system that allows access from either side of the weapon.
FN has also incorporated an automatic retention mechanism that keeps the cover open during loading, unloading, or clearing procedures.
The company said the system includes a built-in stop designed to protect mounted optics and can support sighting equipment weighing up to 2.5 kilograms (5.5 pounds) while the cover remains open.
An adjustable tactical buttstock has also been added, allowing users to modify length and cheek-rest position to improve comfort and sight alignment.
FN noted that the upgrades are compatible not only with the standard MAG but also with M240 and L7A2 variants currently used by the US and UK, respectively.
“As the original designer and manufacturer, we have evolved the FN MAG to meet modern combat requirements, backed by over 135 years of innovation and industrial excellence,” said FN Vice President for Small Arms Christophe Soleil.
FN will display the FN MAG TACTICAL with Long Rail at the Eurosatory defense exhibition in Paris from June 15 to 19.
