EDGE subsidiary ADVANCED CONCEPTS is moving munition safety into the digital realm with the ESAD-50, an electronic safety arming device built to replace mechanical safeties with software-defined control.

Designed for munitions of 50mm caliber and above, the compact unit measures just 50mm in diameter and 100mm in height.

It uses an onboard Inertial Measurement Unit to track acceleration, rotation, and overall flight behavior, building a detailed motion profile before arming is permitted.

At the core of the system is a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA)-based inertial safety mechanism that acts as a digital gatekeeper, preventing premature arming unless predefined environmental conditions are met.

The ESAD-50 also integrates with Electronic Firing Initiators and Electronic Boost Devices, reducing the risk of accidental detonation caused by electromagnetic interference or physical shock.

Testing Progress

ADVANCED CONCEPTS recently completed testing of the device and achieved Technology Readiness Level 4 (TRL-4), confirming the core technology performs as intended.

The company plans to fast-track development toward TRL-7 with a more advanced configuration.

The ESAD-50 represents a step in EDGE’s broader effort to localize critical defense components and strengthen its integrated manufacturing ecosystem.

Production is expected to begin in early 2027 under EDGE’s FALCON unit.
