A US Army soldier is advancing a unique drone solution specifically designed to support psychological operations (PSYOP).

Staff sergeant Tyler Allen’s aircraft can carry printed materials for aerial distribution and support loudspeaker operations, extending the reach of soldiers conducting information operations.

It is built around a modular architecture that allows it to be reconfigured for different mission profiles, giving commanders a flexible tool for information warfare.

The drone is also made from commercially available components, helping keep the system simple and accessible for units looking for an affordable, field-ready option.

“I wanted something that drone operators could repair themselves, customize themselves, and use without needing extensive training,” Allen said.

“I just want this to be another option on the table. Something soldiers can build, use, and adapt to their mission.”

Built to Fill a Need

Allen studied and researched the drone’s design on his own, drawing on personal experience flying remote-controlled aircraft and his work in PSYOP missions.

He took inspiration from different aircraft systems and refined design iterations by identifying specific capabilities he wanted the platform to provide.

The aircraft had multiple prototypes, with each version tested and refined using feedback from users.

“I saw a need for cheap, repairable, and easy-to-use drones at the company and battalion level. I thought there had to be a better way to do it,” Allen stressed. 

“It was a lot of testing, a lot of crashes, and a lot of mistakes. But that was part of the fun.”
