The UK has sent a new homegrown turbojet into the sky less than seven months after the engine existed only as a concept.

Born from a partnership between the UK Ministry of Defence and British startup Alloyed, the engine belongs to a next-gen lineup spanning 30 to 2,000 newtons of thrust. This range could support applications from small drones to larger aircraft.

A 300-newton variant has entered serial production, while a larger 1,100-newton model has reached flight-ready status.

The engines were developed using digital engineering, an approach the UK government said could reshape how the country produces military propulsion systems while supporting domestic industry.

The digital modeling process allows engineers to design, test, and move new propulsion systems toward production within months rather than the years commonly required by traditional development methods.

UK officials also see the program as a way to reduce reliance on foreign supply chains, avoid potential bottlenecks, and deliver new capabilities to the armed forces more quickly.

Building a Domestic Supply Base

The partnership with Alloyed forms part of a new co-development program that brings the Ministry of Defence closer to domestic technology companies.

The initiative has created more than 60 technical jobs, with another 45 roles expected over the next year as the program expands.

Production is also supported by a domestic supply chain involving more than 40 UK companies, including small and medium-sized businesses.

“Taking a jet engine from concept to flight-ready in just a matter of months shows how defense and industry can work together to deliver capabilities at the speed required by today’s world,” UK Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry Luke Pollard said.
