Peraso is taking aim at one of the key challenges facing autonomous aviation: keeping unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) securely connected in environments crowded with electronic interference.

The company’s proposed solution uses 60-gigahertz (GHz) mmWave technology, combining wide bandwidth with highly directional beamforming to deliver fast, low-latency communications with reduced interference.

The technology establishes focused, line-of-sight links between platforms, supporting high-capacity data transfers while limiting signal exposure.

Peraso said its mmWave silicon, systems, and software can also support identification friend-or-foe (IFF) functions, helping operators distinguish friendly platforms from potential threats.

Its compact, low-power architecture is intended to meet the size, weight, and power constraints of smaller unmanned platforms.

Tackling Crowded Airwaves

Peraso is promoting the technology as unmanned systems become more common on the battlefield and demand grows for resilient, high-performance wireless communications.

Conventional systems operating below 6 GHz can face congested airwaves, network interference, electronic jamming, and a greater risk of detection.

By operating in the 60 GHz band and concentrating signals through directional beamforming, Peraso’s technology is intended to provide more reliable connectivity in contested and congested environments.

London Showcase

Peraso will showcase its 60 GHz beamforming and radio-frequency solutions at the UAV Technology Conference in London from September 21 to 22. 

The company and its strategic partner, iNTACT, will display drone identification and communications capabilities designed to operate with low detectability and greater resilience in dense electronic-warfare environments.

During the event, Peraso chief executive Ron Glibbery will present “Directional by Design: How Peraso 60GHz mmWave Enables Secure, High-Capacity Drone Communications.”

His presentation will examine how directional links, beam management, IFF capabilities, and compact communications architectures could support increasingly autonomous and data-intensive unmanned systems.

“Peraso will be onsite to showcase its 60 GHz mmWave technology and discuss how high-throughput, low-latency connectivity can support the next generation of UAV applications,” the company stated.
