India has joined an elite group of nations with advanced propulsion capabilities following the successful development of its first indigenous expendable turbojet engine.

The 350-kilogram (772-pound) thrust-class engine features a pointed aerodynamic inlet with compressor blades positioned around the front section.

Based on available imagery, it also incorporates a compact cylindrical design with side-mounted structural fittings intended to simplify integration across different platforms.

The casing is built with multiple metal rings joined by densely arranged perimeter bolts, a design intended to withstand the intense internal pressures generated during operation.

Further technical details remain undisclosed, but the engine is reportedly designed to power cruise missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles, and other military systems.

From Lab to Delivery

The Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE), a laboratory under India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation, designed the engine, while Hyderabad-based Azad Engineering handled its manufacturing and assembly.

Azad delivered the turbojet engine to GTRE this month, marking a key milestone in India’s efforts to develop advanced aerospace propulsion capabilities.

During the handover ceremony, Azad CEO Shri Rakesh Chopdar presented the engine to Director General of Aeronautical Systems Dr. K. Rajalakshmi Menon and GTRE Director Dr. S.V. Ramanamurty.

The delivery reflects years of collaboration between India’s defense research organizations and industrial partners to develop an indigenous expendable propulsion capability.
