Teledyne FLIR has given unmanned aerial systems (UAS) a new mobile home, letting them launch, fly, and return autonomously in a rugged, self-contained platform.

Built on a “drone-in-a-box” concept, the SkyCarrier keeps UAS secure while closed and opens for autonomous takeoff, even on uneven terrain or in transit.

Integrated near-infrared (NIR) beacons and QR (quick-response) codes guide drones back to designated landing spots or vehicles without operator input.

“SkyCarrier represents a major leap forward in autonomous drone operations,” said Teledyne President Dr. JihFen Lei

“Its ability to launch, recover, and manage drones from moving platforms — without global positioning system (GPS) or constant operator control — makes it a game-changer for missions ranging from battlefield surveillance and disaster response to critical infrastructure protection.”  

Lei added that the platform is adaptable for military and civilian use, offering a versatile UAS solution that reduces operator workload while boosting efficiency.

How SkyCarrier Works

SkyCarrier integrates computer vision systems to operate in areas where radio and GPS signals are suppressed.

It supports both free-flight and tethered operations through network modifications while its container remains fully closed.

In harsh conditions, the system sustains performance with an active thermal management component and built-in rapid charging features.

According to the company, a single operator can manage more than 16 drones, each flying up to 45 minutes while carrying a two-kilogram (4.4-pound) payload.

Tested on Land and Sea

The platform has already been tested on naval vessels, including fast attack and rigid-hull inflatable boats, and with ground vehicles traveling up to 50 kilometers (30 miles) per hour across rigid terrain.

In tests, SkyCarrier carried Teledyne payloads such as thermal and daylight cameras, electronic warfare systems, and signals intelligence tools.

The platform can serve as an intelligence hub for surveillance missions or provide support in search and rescue operations.

SkyCarrier debuted at the Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI) 2025 expo in London.
