Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) has introduced the Freedom Trainer jet, its entry in the US Navy’s Undergraduate Jet Training System competition.

Built from a clean-sheet design, the Freedom is reportedly the only trainer aircraft capable of supporting carrier touch-and-go operations and Field Carrier Landing Practice to touchdown.

That means student naval aviators can practice critical deck approaches much earlier in their training than with existing aircraft.

Part of the Freedom family of training systems, the jet is engineered for lower lifecycle costs while enhancing performance. SNC said engine-related expenses are about 40 percent lower than current navy trainers, and its overall operating costs are roughly half those of land-based rivals.

Sortie times also stretch 30 to 40 percent longer, with its airframe rated for 16,000 hours, eliminating the need for costly service life extension programs.

A digital design and modular open systems architecture give the Naval Air Systems Command direct oversight of future upgrades and the flexibility to bring in third-party technologies as the program evolves.

ATARS Integration

SNC has partnered with Red 6 to integrate the Advanced Tactical Augmented Reality System (ATARS), the first outdoor airborne augmented reality training system, into the Freedom Trainer jet.

With ATARS, student pilots can see and engage virtual threats through helmet-mounted displays while flying live missions.

This makes it possible to run near-peer-level combat scenarios without the cost, risk, or airspace limitations of traditional live training.

ATARS also supports collaborative combat aircraft training, offering a bridge between basic flight instruction and advanced tactical operations.

Industry Push and Program Outlook

SNC is positioning the Freedom Trainer jet as both a disruptive competitor in the navy’s trainer replacement effort and a way to bolster the US defense industrial base.

“This solution not only meets the Navy’s current needs but also anticipates future demands.”

The company has assembled a team of military aviation and training specialists to support the program and align with the US Navy’s timeline for the Undergraduate Jet Training System competition.
