Saab is stepping up the Carl-Gustaf recoilless rifle’s anti-armor role with a new round designed to defeat heavily protected vehicles on the modern battlefield.

The HEAT 758 features a dual-charge warhead meant to first damage explosive reactive armor of tanks before penetrating their main hull.

The second charge can go up against 700mm of armor, positioning it against some of the most resilient armored platforms fielded by adversaries.

“This round is our response to developments on the battlefield where reactive explosive armor has become a major problem for regular munitions trying to defeat armored vehicles,” said Michael Höglund, Saab’s Ground Combat business unit head.

“HEAT 758 is an example of how Saab continues to generate ever more capable products while decreasing the armored vehicle threat to the operator.”

Incorporating Saab Technologies

HEAT 758 utilizes the company’s Firebolt system, which allows it to interface with the Carl-Gustaf launcher and its Fire Control Device 558 aiming solution.

This integration makes the gunner’s workload easier by automating trajectory calculations and increasing first-hit probability against targets.

The munition has already been demonstrated in a live-fire test in Sweden, with an undisclosed customer confirming orders for HEAT 758.

Saab also confirmed that production of the new round is now underway.
