A single ground robot that can swap from hauling supplies to clearing mines or hunting drones in minutes is the vision behind Romanian firm Maximus Labs’ Max1 unmanned ground vehicle (UGV).

Designed around a modular chassis, the new UGV can be reconfigured for combat, logistics, firefighting, emergency response, construction, and agriculture by simply changing its payload, reducing the need for multiple specialized platforms.

It can accommodate payloads weighing up to 850 kilograms (1,874 pounds) and withstand temperatures as high as 500 degrees Celsius (932 degrees Fahrenheit).

The Max1 is also built to operate in toxic and radiation-contaminated environments, expanding its use in hazardous military and emergency response missions.

An onboard AI system helps automate complex tasks, while dual sodium-ion batteries provide more than four hours of endurance and a top speed of 16 kilometers (9.9 miles) per hour.

The robotic vehicle supports remote operation, allowing crews to carry out dangerous tasks from a safe stand-off distance.

Modular by Design

The Max1’s modular architecture supports a wide range of payloads, including remote weapon stations, grenade launchers, radar, electronic warfare systems, acoustic sensors, communications relays, power generators, and mine-clearing or mine-laying equipment.

It can also be fitted with evacuation kits and water cannons, allowing it to shift between military and civilian missions with minimal reconfiguration.

An NVIDIA Jetson Orin module powers the base vehicle’s autonomous functions, including follow-me, push, and return-to-home modes.

Combat variants use a separate Jetson Orin-powered weapon station that acts as an onboard AI processing system capable of autonomously detecting targets at distances of up to 5 kilometers (3.1 miles).

Maintenance is also designed to stay off the workshop floor, with remote software updates, diagnostics, and troubleshooting allowing technicians to resolve many issues without visiting the vehicle.

The Road Ahead

According to The Defence Blog, the UGV meets NATO standards and has already been fielded in the US, France, and Poland.

Additional testing is underway in Romania, the UK, Germany, India, and Morocco.

Except for its US-made communications equipment and NVIDIA processing modules, Maximus Labs said every component of the Max1 is manufactured in Europe.
