US firm Ideal Aerospace has unveiled Troublemaker, a long-range unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) designed to stretch enemy defenses with its reach, versatility, and swarm capabilities.

The drone has a 15-foot (4.6-meter) wingspan and can carry payloads weighing up to 30 pounds (13.6 kilograms), allowing it to accommodate different mission equipment.

Its mission roles include intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), long-range surveillance, decoy operations, and one-way strikes.

Troublemaker is designed for reuse, with operators able to launch it from a catapult or truck and recover it after a mission using a skid landing system.

This approach could lower operating costs by reducing the need to replace aircraft after every mission and allowing operators to reuse available UAV assets.

The drone can also operate in swarms, coordinating surveillance, deception, and strike missions to make it harder for adversaries to identify and prioritize threats.

“Troublemaker delivers the range and endurance more commonly associated with much larger aircraft in a two-person-portable Group 3 form factor,” said Shane Brady, vice president of Ideal Aerosmith Government Systems.

“That combination gives the warfighter greater reach, persistence and flexibility across strike, reconnaissance and collaborative mission profiles.”

Targeting 20 Drones Per Week

Ideal Aerospace has built 26 Troublemaker aircraft to date and begun low-rate production, averaging approximately two units per week, according to Breaking Defense.

If demand increases, the company plans to use its existing infrastructure to scale production to as many as 20 aircraft per week.

David Markert, senior vice president and general manager of Ideal Government Systems, added that the drone received sponsorship from the US Department of the Navy.

The launch highlights the company’s focus on scalable production and modular designs that can adapt to evolving mission requirements.
