Lockheed Martin has unveiled a lower-cost Patriot interceptor designed to counter cruise missiles as well as close- and short-range ballistic threats.
The new PAC-3 Adapted Capability Effector (ACE) is expected to cost less than half as much per interceptor as the company’s PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE).
Built on the PAC-3 fire-control architecture, the interceptor is compatible with both the Patriot weapon system and the Integrated Battle Command System.
The interceptor is intended to complement existing Patriot interceptors, expanding magazine depth at a lower cost.

Lockheed said PAC-3 ACE will be developed and produced in collaboration with US and European industry partners.
“American and allied warfighters need a solution that is battle-tested and budget-smart, and PAC-3 ACE delivers exactly that by building on the unrivaled performance of the PAC-3 MSE,” said Tim Cahill, president of Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control.
“As we look to partner with our allies, we can further enhance resiliency and ensure our forces can swiftly counter emerging threats today and tomorrow.”
Based on the PAC-3 MSE
The PAC-3 MSE uses hit-to-kill technology, destroying incoming threats through direct kinetic impact.
Powered by a two-pulse solid rocket motor, it can engage targets at altitudes of up to 118,000 feet (35,966 meters) and ranges of 75 miles (120 kilometers).

The interceptor also features an impact-fuze detonation mechanism, active radar homing, and a high-explosive fragmentation warhead.
It is currently in service with several US allies, including Bahrain, Poland, and Ukraine.
Based on Lockheed’s estimates, a PAC-3 ACE interceptor is expected to cost about $2.5 million, compared with roughly $5 million for a PAC-3 MSE.
