A new inertial measurement unit (IMU) from HRL Laboratories promises precise navigation for defense and aerospace systems in a palm-sized package.

The “AXI-R100” system is built to extend navigation accuracy in GPS-contested conditions, with the company claiming it outperforms comparable sensor technologies on the market.

Using silicon micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) technology, the IMU reportedly delivers tactical-grade performance while remaining compact enough for high-volume production.

The company said the AXI-R1000 could support a range of defense, aerospace, and automotive automotive applications, including missile guidance systems and drones.

It added that the system is ready for integration following vibration, shock, and thermal testing that validated its design.

HRL showcased AXI-R1000 at the 2026 Joint Navigation Conference held in Ohio.

Built for Scale

The company said it adapted production techniques from automotive industry partners, which also influenced the system’s overall design approach.

The IMU is compatible with what HRL describes as “foundry fabrication processes,” enabling mass production.

“Our gyroscopes and inertial sensors support navigation, pointing, and stabilization systems for autonomous vehicles, aircraft, and guided missile and munition applications,” said Jeff Dickman, director of Precision Sensing at HRL Laboratories.

“We leveraged our extensive microelectronics legacy along with innovations in micromechanical and manufacturing processes to pave the way for AXI-R100 to address the urgent needs from our industrial base.”
