Navantia UK is expanding its autonomous maritime ambitions with a new Large Autonomous Surface Vessel concept designed to operate in challenging sea conditions.

Named the LASV75, the modular platform measures 75 meters (246 feet) long, nearly 12 meters (39.4 feet) wide, and reportedly displaces around 1,000 tonnes.

The vessel is being developed to support future “hybrid navy” operations that combine crewed and uncrewed platforms with autonomous technologies.

Based on released imagery, the design appears to integrate a vertical launch system alongside a large aft mission deck configured for containerized payload modules.

It also features deck-mounted naval gun systems and a configurable mast capable of supporting various sensor suites.

Depending on its setup, the LASV75 could perform missions ranging from surveillance and escort operations to electronic warfare and strike roles.

“Autonomous vessels are fundamental to the future of sovereign defense capabilities,” said Derek Jones, chief commercial and business development officer at Navantia UK. 

“Naval capabilities of the future will comprise a hybrid mixture of crewed warships with uncrewed escorts and ancillary ships.”

Aligned With Wider Modernization

The LASV75 arrives alongside Navantia UK’s broader modernization effort following its acquisition of Harland & Wolff’s assets last year.

The initiative is backed by a 157 million pound ($199 million) investment across the company’s shipyards in Appledore, Arnish, Belfast, and Methil.
