Honeywell Aerospace has put its SAMURAI counter-drone system to the test, proving its ability to protect forces against the rising threats of swarms.

The company conducted two demonstrations in front of local military officials, where the SAMURAI was operated from both a ground vehicle and a tethered balloon 1,000 feet (304.8 meters) above the ground.

Developed with digital engineering to speed up design, the system follows Pentagon modularity standards, making it a plug-and-play solution against multiple incoming drones.

This setup also allows operators to mix and match various countermeasure solutions without compromising day-to-day usability.

Honeywell made reliability a key part of the SAMURAI, providing a single point of contact for upgrades as battlefield threats evolve.

“Our recent successful demonstrations not only provided strong examples of how Honeywell’s SAMURAI system can provide critical capabilities on the battlefield, but they also proved the technology is highly reliable, scalable, and ready to integrate into existing defensive systems,” said Honeywell President Matt Milas.

Blended Components 

The SAMURAI, short for Stationary and Mobile UAS Reveal and Intercept, blends kinetic interceptors and detectors into one mobile system.

It integrates components from different manufacturers such as Blue Halo and Leonardo DRS, combining radio frequency detection with light-based sensors to spot and identify potential threats.

Honeywell claimed that the SAMURAI also supports beyond-visual-line-of-sight communication and command-and-control functions, and can be deployed on moving or stationary platforms to protect valuable assets.

“This system’s multi-layered defensive capabilities set it apart in the industry and enable it to not only track and detect, but also defeat multiple threats,” Milas added.

Closing the Gap

Recent assessments warned that the US counter-drone arsenal is “insufficient,” as rivals like China pour resources into advanced unmanned aerial system weapons.

At a September military parade, Beijing rolled out new laser systems and uncrewed vehicles capable of supporting assault and reconnaissance missions.

Honeywell’s SAMURAI could contribute to closing this gap, offering a defense system built to adapt to evolving drone swarm threats.

“Swarm drones pose increasing risks to high-value assets — as a result, the ability to detect, track, and counter them is a crucial part of modern military operations,” Milas noted.
