Artificial intelligence (AI), turbojet interceptors, and tactical radars are now working as one in Europe’s latest stab at drone defense.

French firm Alta Ares has introduced the Tactical Protection Dome, a counter-unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) system that pairs Thales and Echodyne radars with X-Wing turbojet interceptors to stop threats within a 30-kilometer (19-mile) range.

Once an interceptor commits to a target, an onboard algorithm takes over, assisting in the final approach without human input.

The AI system behind the autonomy, called Pixel Lock, lets the Dome detect, track, and chase down drones in one continuous loop.

“The Tactical Protection Domes are the culmination of collaboration between several French, Ukrainian, American, and German defense actors,” said Hadrien Canter, president of Alta Ares.

“This success illustrates our ability to design agile, interoperable solutions proven in the field, serving the security of our allies.”

Eyes on NATO

The system was recently put through a live test in front of NATO representatives at Bicarrosse, France.

Before the demo, the Dome had already seen action in the frontline areas around Kyiv, where Alta Ares is also planning a joint production line with a Ukrainian partner.

French President Emmanuel Macron and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky also inspected the system during its reveal at Base Aérienne 107 in Paris.

“This recognition at the highest level confirms that Alta Ares is becoming a key European answer to one of the most critical security challenges of our time,” the company stated.
