US drones could be in line for a power boost, with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) backing MagLev Aero’s effort to develop a next-generation propulsion system.
Built around an efficient architecture, the platform is designed to deliver more thrust with less power while enabling higher speeds, greater payload capacity, and a lower noise signature.
The company said these capabilities could benefit drones designed to evade detection, counter other drones, and deliver supplies.
The effort comes as the US seeks propulsion technologies that can improve the performance and capabilities of its growing drone fleet.

MagLev Aero said its technology also supports the White House’s “Drone Dominance” initiative, which aims to reduce US reliance on foreign drone technologies, particularly those from China.
“Supported by this non-dilutive government funding and an accelerating defense-market demand signal, MagLev Aero is advancing the industrialization of its next-generation propulsion platform,” the company stated.
DARPA Funds the Push
MagLev Aero has secured concurrent awards from DARPA under the Minimum Viable Product (MVP) and Embedded Entrepreneur Initiative (EEI) programs.
Under the effort, the company will build and test a full-scale propulsion demonstrator in flight-relevant conditions, with the goal of reaching Technology Readiness Level 6.

The approach could help reduce adoption risks for manufacturers by validating the system’s aerodynamic performance and providing a drop-in propulsion architecture.
“These dual DARPA contracts represent a major inflection point for MagLev Aero” said Ian Randall, co-founder and chief executive officer of MagLev Aero.
“We are not just proving out physics in a lab; we are … delivering a proven solution that meets the urgent national need for trusted, high-performance US drone technologies.”
