China takes a new approach to powering its logistics with the Changying-8 (CY-8), the world’s heaviest multi-terrain cargo drone designed for high-altitude missions.
Developed by China North Industries Group Corporation (Norinco), the drone measures 17 meters (56 feet) long with a 25-meter (82-foot) wingspan.
Its 18-cubic-meter (636-cubic-foot) fully enclosed cargo bay has both front and rear access, enabling rapid loading and unloading of payloads in about 15 minutes.
Weighing 3.5 tonnes (7,700 pounds) with an equal payload capacity, the CY-8 has a maximum takeoff weight of 7 tonnes (15,400 pounds).

Twin turboprop engines allow short takeoffs and landings from basic island runways, with a range exceeding 3,000 kilometers (1,864 miles).
The CY-8 supports a range of missions, including reconnaissance, resupply, emergency rescue, and communications relay, providing flexible support across both military and civilian operations.
First Flight Trials
Norinco recently put the drone through its paces for the first time to validate its flight control, avionics, power and fuel systems, and flight performance.

The test took place at an airport in Zhengzhou, where the aircraft lifted off after a short 280-meter (919-foot) taxi and completed a 30-minute flight before landing.
According to the company, the drone’s ability to operate within a take-off and landing distance of under 500 meters (1,640 feet) is crucial for operations on the Tibetan Plateau.
Further testing is underway, with production expected before the end of this year.
