China has dropped what appears to be the first official visuals of its mysterious sixth-generation combat platform, offering a rare glimpse of an aircraft long surrounded by speculation.
The aircraft, believed to be the J-36, appeared in a four-minute video published by China Military Bugle, the official press account of the People’s Liberation Army.
Based on the available footage, the aircraft features a tailless, diamond-shaped wing design, briefly seen during a sharp climbing turn.
The video also shows two pilots aboard a nearby Y-20 transport aircraft in conversation. “Who are we refuelling today?” the co-pilot asked. “First the ‘Master Six,’ then the ‘Little Six,’” the captain replies before watching the fighter jet streak across the sky.
According to the South China Morning Post, “Little Six” is widely interpreted as a reference to a sixth-generation fighter.
Despite the official reveal, no technical details have been disclosed about the aircraft, including its engine, armament suite, sensor systems, operational range, or overall performance envelope.
The Race for Sixth-Gen Airpower
China is advancing two sixth-generation fighter programs, with Chengdu Aircraft Corporation linked to the J-36 and Shenyang Aircraft Corporation developing the J-50.
The aircraft are expected to feature reduced radar signatures, extended operational range, advanced propulsion technologies, and the ability to operate alongside autonomous combat drones.

The development places China alongside the US, the UK, Italy, and Japan, all of which are pursuing sixth-generation fighter programs.
The US Air Force expects to field the F-47 by 2028, while the US Navy continues development of its F/A-XX carrier-based fighter.
