UK-based tech firm HBK has developed an “ultra-compact” inertial navigation system (INS) designed to support high-precision localization in autonomous military platforms.

Built by its subsidiary MicroStrain, the 3DM-CV7-GNSS/INS combines dual-frequency Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers with inertial sensors in a tiny, embeddable unit.

It also includes a temperature calibrator and an onboard linear correction algorithm to help maintain accuracy across changing conditions.

Weighing just 15.6 grams (0.5 ounce) and measuring 38 x 30 x 10 millimeters (1.4 x 1.1 x 0.3 inches), the system is suited for small, low-weight platforms like tactical drones, especially those operating in signal-denied domains.

The device is also compatible with open-source autopilot software, making it easier to integrate into existing unmanned systems.

‘Every Gram Matters’

HBK said the development of the 3DM-CV7-GNSS/INS highlights its expertise in inertial sensing, reliable standards, positioning system support, and product flexibility for demanding applications.

“With the 3DM-CV7-GNSS/INS, we’re bringing tactical-grade performance to applications where every gram and millimeter matter,” stated HBK Engineering Manager Justin Bessette.

The company also pointed to the system’s low-latency processing and resilience in signal-degraded environments as key to enabling next-generation unmanned platforms.

“Built for real-world situations, this embeddable sensor is a flexible, ready-to-integrate solution – making advanced navigation easier to deploy and more dependable across the board,” Bessette added.
