The world of classified intelligence just got an AI upgrade.

American firm Anthropic is behind a new artificial intelligence tool designed to handle the military’s most sensitive defense information.

Called “Claude Gov,” the custom-built large language model, akin to OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini, securely processes classified data and sharpens intelligence analysis across defense, language, and cybersecurity.

It can assist with a wide range of tasks, from strategic planning to threat detection and operational support, empowering swift and informed decision-making for national security operations.

Unlike consumer-facing AI models, which are trained to reject sensitive or confidential information, Claude Gov is engineered to be more permissive when working with classified inputs. “They refuse less when engaging with classified information,” the company noted.

Anthropic said Claude Gov is already in use by select US national security agencies, though it did not name them.

Answering a Growing Trend

The launch of Claude Gov reflects a wider trend across the national security landscape, as government agencies and defense contractors turn to AI to speed up analysis, enhance decision-making, and modernize operations.

Earlier this year, OpenAI launched “ChatGPT Gov,” a customized version built specifically for the US government and hosted securely within Microsoft’s Azure cloud.

Beyond large language models, Meta is also actively collaborating with Washington, adapting its advanced tech for military wearables.

This rapidly expanding landscape now sees numerous other tech giants and specialized defense firms actively developing and deploying AI solutions for national security applications.

For example, Palantir provides AI-powered data analytics for intelligence and defense, Shield AI is developing “Hivemind” AI pilots for military aircraft, and Scale AI is focusing on AI-powered data labeling and intelligence analysis for classified networks.
