AM General has rolled out an updated Hawkeye 105mm Mobile Howitzer System, a lighter and more mobile artillery platform built around the needs of modern operations.

Unveiled at AUSA 2025, the redesigned system features a new chassis, upgraded powertrain, and a digital fire-control suite aimed at giving small units faster, more flexible fire support.

It can move into position, fire, and relocate in under 90 seconds, allowing crews to avoid counterbattery fire while keeping up a steady rate of fire.

Weighing roughly 4.5 tons, the Hawkeye mounts an M20 howitzer fitted with the company’s soft recoil tech, which reportedly cuts recoil forces by up to 60 percent. This allows the gun to fire safely from a lightweight tactical truck without compromising safety and stability.

The system can strike targets up to 19.5 kilometers (12 miles) away, achieve a rate of fire of three rounds per minute, and operate with a three-person crew.

Company officials said the upgrade reflects the army’s shift toward multi-domain operations, where speed, precision, and mobility increasingly define battlefield advantage.

Expeditionary by Design

Built for expeditionary operations, the new Hawkeye focuses on mobility and digitally assisted precision.

Its fire-control suite integrates GPS-linked ballistic computation, automated gun laying, and encrypted communications aligned with the army’s sensor-to-shooter network.

While not yet officially fielded, the redesigned system is intended to complement heavier US artillery platforms such as the M777 and M109A7 Paladin.

“It’s an exciting time at AM General as we maneuver to best support the US Army’s needs on the evolving battlefield,” said Jim Cannon, AM General President and CEO.

“AUSA provides the best venue for us to demonstrate to customers our transformation through innovative, lethal, and combat-proven systems that enhance the warfighters’ readiness.”
