A British armored platform is being transformed into a command hub for uncrewed ground vehicles (UGVs), potentially bringing the UK army closer to its vision of a hybrid fleet.

British firms ARX Robotics and General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS) are exploring how Hector UGVs could operate alongside the Ajax fighting vehicle using Generic Vehicle Architecture.

The architecture provides a common digital standard that allows different military platforms to share data and coordinate tasks without requiring extensive bespoke modifications.

Through the proposed integration, the companies aim to extend the operational reach of crewed vehicles while keeping personnel farther from direct threats.

“It’s about creating something greater than the sum of its parts: combining sophisticated crewed platforms with fast, modular autonomous systems that can deliver [intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, counter-drone], logistics and other battlefield effects,” ARX Robotics stated.

“[It is a] major step towards making human-machine teaming a deployable reality for the British Army.”

Combining Armor and Autonomy

According to the British Army, Ajax is designed to become “the most advanced, medium weight, armored fighting vehicle in the world.”

It is reportedly on track to reach full operational capability between October 2028 and September 2029.

Hector, meanwhile, is a relatively new addition to ARX Robotics’ uncrewed portfolio. The wheeled UGV can be remotely controlled or operate with supervised autonomy.

Available in conventional combustion and all-electric variants, Hector is designed to minimize noise and heat signatures during missions.
