Saab is tightening the loop between target detection and tracking with the Giraffe AMB D, a new radar system that updates tracked targets every second, enabling near real-time air surveillance for short- and medium-range air defense roles.

At its core, the system combines active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar hardware with updated software and modern processing to enhance surveillance performance.

It is designed to improve situational awareness through extended detection range and more advanced target tracking capabilities.

Saab said the Giraffe AMB D is intended to detect and track a wide range of airborne threats while maintaining flexibility for future operational demands.

Its software-defined architecture also reportedly supports continuous upgrades, allowing the radar to evolve in line with future operational requirements.

“Giraffe AMB D demonstrates how technological innovation can enhance sensor capability while making the system more compact and deployable, with a reduced footprint,” said Carl-Johan Bergholm, head of surveillance at Saab.

“The result is a highly modular, mobile multi-domain radar that provides operational flexibility from the tactical edge to strategic missions.”

Advanced Threat Detection

The radar integrates a mid-range frequency sensor with command, control, and communications housed in a self-contained 20-foot (6-meter) cabin.

Built for 360-degree coverage, it also includes Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) functionality to reduce the risk of misidentification in complex operational environments.

A hydraulically operated mast raises the antenna to 12 meters (39 feet), improving low-altitude coverage and extending detection range.

The system also incorporates electronic counter-countermeasures to resist interference in contested electromagnetic environments.

Among the threats it can track are supersonic fighters, cruise missiles, helicopters, low-altitude drones, rockets, artillery, and mortar rounds.
