Greece is giving its 30-year-old Mercedes G-Class military vehicles a sweeping overhaul for modern battlefield operations.
Through advanced technology and engineering, Hellenic Vehicle Industries (ELVO) will equip the aging platforms with new engines and automatic transmissions to improve performance and simplify operation.
The vehicles will also receive electric air-conditioning systems and redesigned interiors with ergonomic crew seating and armrests.
For greater situational awareness, ELVO will install 360-degree camera systems with day and night viewing capabilities. LED fixtures and additional exterior lights will improve visibility during field operations.
Protection upgrades include anti-drone nets, thermal and visual camouflage, and reinforced windshields for riot-control missions.
ELVO said the modernized vehicles will meet military standards and feature a modular architecture capable of supporting additional weapon systems.

The company described the project as “a comprehensive transformation of the vehicles to meet today’s operational requirements.”
Rather than replacing the fleet, the program seeks to extend the vehicles’ service life while giving the Greek military new capabilities at a lower cost.
ELVO said the modernization work will be carried out entirely in Greece using domestic technology and personnel.
“ELVO is redefining what military vehicle modernization can deliver,” ELVO General Manager Antonis Vitetzakis said.
“By combining our deep engineering expertise with the latest technologies, we can bring existing fleets into the modern era, combining decades of operational service with new capabilities while maximizing the value of investments our customers have already made.”
