A kinetic counter-drone system that uses edge AI to engage unmanned aerial systems (UAS) is at the center of California-based ARCYN Defense’s latest effort to build a scalable battlefield defense platform.
Named “Iron Rain,” the system combines a patent-pending kinetic mechanism with a configurable projectile design.
It uses edge AI for real-time targeting, while a high rate-of-fire promises precise, scalable engagements against emerging UAS targets.
Unlike traditional counter-drone systems that rely on jamming or cyber effects, ARCYN envisions Iron Rain as a rapidly deployable kinetic solution for high-intensity operations.
The platform is intended to counter autonomous drones, electronic warfare-enabled threats, and drone swarms.

“Much of the counter-UAS market is still focused on solutions that can be expensive, narrow in application, or difficult to scale in contested environments,” said ARCYN CEO Dr. Aaron Poynton.
“ARCYN is building a complementary kinetic layer designed for speed, portability, precision, and affordability. Our goal is not simply to detect or disrupt drones, but to give operators a practical way to defeat them at scale.”
Accelerating Development
ARCYN announced a second seed funding round to accelerate the system’s development and testing.
It has also signed a cooperative research agreement with the US Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Armaments Center, while a Department of Defense field trial is planned.
The company said it is also in discussions with industry partners on validation, deployment, and potential integration opportunities.
“Our technical objective is to deliver a precise, adaptable, and operationally relevant kinetic defense capability for modern aerial threats,” ARCYN Chief Technology Officer Dr. Fazel Farahmand explained.
