A new backpackable unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) from AeroVironment (AV) could help troops conduct reconnaissance and explosive ordnance disposal missions without risking their lives.

The platform, known as the TOM 50 RE, weighs less than 10 kilograms (22 pounds), offers up to five hours of endurance, and supports payloads of up to 5 kilograms (11 pounds).

Developed by AV subsidiary Telerob, it features a tracked design, stair-climbing flipper mechanism, and mobility attachments that allow it to navigate obstacles and uneven terrain.

For reconnaissance missions, the system uses onboard simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) to generate detailed maps of complex environments, including GPS-denied areas.

Operators can mark points of interest within the digital map and export mission data after operations to support intelligence analysis and follow-on planning.

The TOM 50 RE also supports modular disruptor and drop-charge payloads, enabling operators to neutralize explosive threats from a safer distance.

“Today’s operators need systems that move with them, adapt to multiple missions, and provide immediate intelligence while reducing risk to human life. TOM 50 RE delivers that capability in a highly portable form factor built for the tactical edge.”

The vehicle was unveiled at the Eurosatory 2026 event in Paris.

AV_Halo’s Role

The platform uses an internet protocol mesh radio architecture for communications, enabling it to function as a mobile repeater that extends connectivity in complex terrain.

Operators control the UGV via AV_Halo COMMAND using the Tomahawk Grip family of controllers or the Robo Command Control System.

The interface allows operators to manage the TOM 50 RE alongside other uncrewed systems, supporting coordinated control during complex missions.

The system is also equipped with four high-resolution wide-angle infrared cameras, providing 360-degree situational awareness in day and night conditions.
